BACK when the full horror of the Vietnam War was beginning to bite with the American public, as GIs were being killed in increasingly horrifying numbers, Nelson Rockefeller turned up in Saigon. The Republican luminary, presidential aspirant, and future US vice-president, travelled all over, but refused to answer questions from the ravenous press, presumably on the grounds that it spared him having to acknowledge what a complete disaster the whole debacle was.
